A Day in the Life of Atmananda

Through the Obscurity of TIME, Eternal messages Shine Forth...

Swami Atmananda Chaitanya was a wandering monk who lived in India a few centuries ago. He never cared about any of his identities and corresponding details such as date of birth, place of birth, name and stature. Many people followed him in his seemingly aimless  journeys – some out of curiosity, some out of faith. He never stayed at one place for more than 3 nights and, irrespective of the climate, he always continued his journeys without fail.

During one of his journeys, he reached a city close to a great river revered by many. He and his entourage stayed near a big Shiva temple. In those days, usually outside the temples, there used to be shelters for wandering monks, provided by the local rulers free of cost. They also provided two meals a day.

Gratitude and Surrender Get Expressed as Temples. Deities Happen...

Many people knew Atmananda because of his constant journeys and presence in many places. So, naturally, many people came to see him to take his blessings. That day, the local magistrate and his wife were visiting the temple for worship. They saw an unusual crowd in front of the temple. The magistrate sent his attendant to check what is going on there. He came back and said “there is a famous saint sitting at the pillar. People have assembled to take his darsan and blessings.” The magistrate and his wife decided to take the blessing of the saint, as it is customary in India to respect saints, even though one may not know their identity or the system they follow. This tradition continues to some extent, even today (This could also be the reason why so many criminals and “un-saintly” people wear the robe of saints and cheat the authorities and people even now. Those who fail in every other areas of life, escape into saffron (the color of the clothes that denote renunciation) too. Many seeming saints are escapists. This is the truth of our society. You may not agree with this point. It does not matter. Kindly read on…) 🙂 .

The magistrate and his wife came to where Atmananda was sitting, and prostrated at his feet. Atmananda blessed the official and said: “You have prostrated at my feet today. Next year this time, you will come to the same temple with a baby boy.” The magistrate and his wife were surprised at how this Swamiji knew that they were childless, even though they have been married for more than 12 years!!! The magistrate was overwhelmed by this spontaneous prediction. He went and explained that day’s event to the Collector of the City, a British man called Stephen Howard. The top position of the city was that of the Collector. Stephen was a good and kind man. Well educated and full of respect for his foster country and its culture. He wanted to meet the saint and took off to do that, without further ado.

Our Past Creates our Present. Memories get erased. We fail to see the eternal lineage and swing between happiness and sorrow...

When Stephen reached the temple premises, the crowd had already increased. Being the ruler of the city, he was given way and thus soon arrived in front of the saint. Atmananda looked at Stephen and said: ” Your color belies your inherent nature. An Indian born in England!!!” Stephen did not understand anything. Atmananda explained about Stephen’s past birth in India and his lineage from his past family(the family he was born to in his last life)  till the current generation who are alive in the family of his last life. And incidentally, Stephen had met these people whom Atmananda was talking about, after he came to India. And surprisingly, he had felt a strange familiarity and affection towards them, as if he knew them from the past. He gave some of them jobs in government departments and thus ensured their proximity to him. Now, everything made sense to him!!! He was indeed an Indian!!! He still has a heart full of love for India. This was his home!!! He was so fascinated with the British and their ways in his past life, that he took birth in England in this life, but, came back to India with the heart of an Indian. He felt at home in India.

Atmananda asked, with a knowing smile:  “Who are you?” (Stephen had not disclosed his identity as yet)

Stephen replied with extreme humility: “My name is Stephen Howard.”

A: “That is your name. My question is who you are.”

S: I am the Collector of the city. Mine is the highest position in the governance of this city.”

A: “That is your job. My question is, who you are!!!”

S: (Confused) “Well, as you know, I am from England and on deputation to this city, by Her Majesty’s orders.”

Atmananda laughed aloud: “You still do not know who you are!!!”

S: (More Confused) “Well, I am a lawyer by profession. I have B.A in Administration as my qualification. I am the second son of my parents who live in England. I have two brothers and a sister.”

Atmananda laughed until tears came from his eyes:” HA HA HA HA……… You still did not tell me who you are!!!”

Stephen surrendered. He bowed down and requested Atmananda to save him from this embarrassment and give him the answer to the question.

Atmananda said: “You are neither your name, nor your position, nor your qualifications. Neither are you the relationships that you mentioned just now. All these add up in defining your existence in this life. You are beyond all these. Most of the things that you mentioned are transitory and temporary. They are all relative terms. You are trying to understand your existence in relative terms. But, your existence is not that. You are beyond your nationality, color, qualification and position. You are an eternal soul!!! That is what you are!!! You are eternally flowing through many bodies that you have assumed over life times. You are what you are, during your waking time, dreaming time and time during your deep sleep. All that you assume is in relation to something. While in the waking state, you are a husband in relation to your wife, a son in relation to your father, a brother in relation to your sister, etc. All these identifications dissolve completely when you enter your deep sleep state. You are everything and you are nothing. Your whole existence is in relation to something. You have come to me for this understanding. I bless you. Go in Peace.”

Stephen was spellbound. He stood there, literally spell-bound. He felt that something exploded in his spine. A kind of awakening that he had been waiting for, since birth!! Deep gratefulness welled inside him. Tears flowed from his eyes.

When Man Walls Himself from Nature, When He Stops Listening to The Heartbeat of Mother Nature, Calamities Take Place...

Atmananda then turned towards a group of farmers who had come to see him, completely ignoring Stephen. Atmananda had no fancy for power or people of power and position. He had nothing to do with terrestrial hierarchies. He addressed the farmers.

“Ignorance is not a virtue. Learn the ways of the earth. Apply that knowledge for the benefit of all. Respect nature and her subtle expressions, but never timidly surrender to it. Never surrender to silly emotions, nor exploitation. Surrender to the will of God expressed through mother nature. Accept the will of God with extreme humility. Share selflessly with others and survive during tough times. Sow when the climate is favorable. Reap when the fruits are ripe and ready. Follow the seasons. Never cut a tree that has not fully completed its life and willingly ready for the axe. Worship trees as they are great saints. Never destroy them insensitively. They are benevolent to the whole world. Leave the forests alone and do not farm in the forests. Forests are for the birds and animals who inhabit them. Stay away from forests and do not disturb the wildlife. Co-exist in peace and harmony with all the birds and animals. Build your house with matured stones. They can weather storms. Live in peace and harmony and never disturb the nature – ever.”

Many people had offered Atamananda fruits and he distributed some of them to the poor farmers. They departed with a deep feeling of fulfillment. Stephen watched this with amazement.

To the Police officer who had accompanied Stephen, Atmananda said: ” Thieves and robbers should be punished, otherwise, society will move in the path of anarchy and lawlessness. No violence should be entertained. No contamination should be allowed or accepted. Destruction of public property should never be allowed. Nobody has the right to destroy anything. If the law is enforced, without violence towards the people, this country will prosper. Any country or ruler that exploits the helplessness of its people will undoubtedly perish. Exploiting helplessness is a serious crime. Society will crumble. Children will rebel. Prevention of crime as well as preservation of law are serious matters, which require a lot of sensitiveness and dare. It takes a heart of compassion to enforce law. It takes humility and conviction. I bless you with that.” The officer bowed down in extreme humility.

Laws Should Breed Peace and Liberation in the Society, Not Slavery and Bondage...Society Living in Fear Will Collapse by Itself...

To a prostitute who was in the crowd, Atmananda said: ” Divine woman, you are serving the society. Because of you, your sisters of this city are enjoying peace and security. Because of women like you, other women can walk freely, without fear even at midnight. You are like a candle. You are burning yourself for the society’s well-being. Because of you, lonely men are satisfied. The society trapped you and pushed you into this. You have been sold by your own kin. You are burning inside and you crave for a normal life of a woman, which you cannot. No woman will want to be in your position of such helplessness. Yet, your heart is pure. You mean no harm to anyone. You have no hatred and feeling of revenge against anyone. Your heart brims with kindness and love. I Bless You.

And, the society is satisfied. Because you remove the frustrations of lonely men, the society is cleaner. I bow to you, Divine Woman.”  Many could not contain their surprise at these words. Stephen, who was listening to this told to himself:  “How true. The age old profession and how much it is contributing to the balance of the society!!! Mental balance of people will certainly reflect in the balance of the society because society consists of people. This saint is calling a prostitute “Divine” !!! It is time I change my perspectives. Everything in the society is Divine!!!”

Everyone Serves the Society in their own way. Some Burn themselves to give Light to others..But, They are never remembered!!!....

A businessman came and prostrated at the feet of Atmananda. While he was getting up, he saw Stephen standing there and naturally gravitated towards him. He tried to bow down to Stephen, who avoided him in embarrassment. Stephen thought: “Even in the presence of the holy man, this fool is commercial-minded. He is trying to make bridges with me, not caring about the saint and His blessings.” Atmananda, as if reading the mind of Stephen, addressed the rich businessman: ” My beloved watchman, I believe you have reached a wrong destination. Are you sure you are at the right place?” Suddenly the rich man pulled his attention from Stephen, looked at the smiling saint and prostrated at his feet again. “Dear Watchman, these feet have no commercial value. I believe you are wasting your time.” The businessman felt embarrassed. He thought that Swamiji has mistaken him for a mere watchman. He told Atmananda: “Swamiji, I am not a watchman. I own the biggest jewelery, restaurant, garment shop ………. and I also feed the poor in the temple.” Atmananda laughed aloud. He laughed and laughed. The businessman became completely white with embarrassment.  All people watched with amusement. Laughter brought tears in the eyes of the saint.

Greed Breeds Corruption. It contaminates the entire society, shakes its integrity and leads it to doom...

Laughter is contagious. It spreads like wild fire. The whole crowd except the businessman started laughing. Even Stephen could not hold his laughter. When the laughter subsided, Atmananda asked the businessman to sit down. “My friend, you have come here because your servants told you that Stephen has come to see me. You have not come out of faith in me. You have come to get closer to Stephen which may increase your business prospects. Then, why are you pretending? You think you can fool me? I can see through you. You are a watchman of your own wealth. You have no freedom. You are over-possessive. You do not give any freedom to your workers either. You are treating everyone as slaves, including your own family members. Even though you have a lot of wealth, you never pay your staff on time. Not only on time, you always deduct from their salaries, blaming them falsely for some mistakes. You do not enjoy your life. You have no peace in heart. You are constantly worried about thieves. Your heart is filled with fear and anxiety. You do not sleep. Money has given you sleeplessness. Even the chicken in your house sleeps better than you, despite the threat that you may kill them any day!!!. You greedy man, your children are also suffering because of you. Your whole family suffers because of you. You think that by paying money to God, by conducting elaborate rituals every year, you can relieve yourself from all the sins that you commit everyday. NEVER. God has nothing to do with your lifestyle. You have alienated yourself from God. You are making your own life miserable and your family is also in chains. They will suffer further. You can get nothing from me. You are a filled-up cup. Empty yourself from your ego and attitude and come to me. I will fill you up with wisdom and understanding. When you empty yourself, your life will begin there and then. You will stop being a watchman of your own wealth and family. Remember, all that you consider as yours will come with you only till your death. You will depart alone. Death will forcefully detach you from everything. The fire will burn your body into ashes. Then, you will be just a handful of ash. A life of greed will ensure an end in grief. Greed, envy, Jealousy, ego and all such terrestrial emotions will lead to sorrows and diseases. Beware.”

After a short pause, while all the others remained speechless, Atmananda continued: “Oh, foolish man. You believe that all are respecting you out of love. Nonsense!! People pretend their respect towards you out of fear, because through money, you have gained connections in high places. NOBODY loves you, including your own family members. They fear you. They pretend love. They are suffering. Even your children will rejoice when you die. They will definitely squander the wealth that you have accumulated through your selfishness, as liberation will create corresponding expressions, which are most likely to be wild expressions of freedom from tyranny!!! Sometimes, people who are chained do not know how to enjoy freedom when they get it. This will be the case with your family members. You will suffer more and more through your family members. Your eldest son is already squandering your hard earned money on prostitutes. Your daughter has many lovers. You will see that happening more and more, unless you shed your ego and attitude, and shift to benevolence and sincere, unconditional love. Move away, I have nothing to give you. Even if I give anything to you, you will not be able to hold it, let alone carry it. What I could possibly give you, is more precious than your whole wealth put together. You will not be able to buy it. This poor woman here is wealthier than you (He pointed towards the young prostitute). She has a rich heart, filled with compassion. She just took home a new born baby girl found abandoned in the waste bin, by her unknown glorious parents. Even though she is poor, she is taking care of this new soul too. Have you ever bought a meal to a poor man? Have you even thought about such an act of kindness? Haven’t you abused beggars and poured hot water on them, and drove them away? Haven’t you let your fearsome dogs on poor garbage pickers? Man, Your money cannot buy what I can offer. Do not waste my time, go away.”

Everyone watched this in pin drop silence. Nobody dared to move. The businessman sat there in awe as if he just saw a fearsome ghost. He was stripped completely in front of the crowd. His ego was annihilated unceremoniously. He fell at the feet of the saint and wept uncontrollably. The saint stood up. It was time for him to take bath and get into worship and meditation. It was already well past the afternoon and close to sunset. It was time to move on. Atmananda distributed all that he received to everyone assembled, and he walked towards the nearby river to take bath. Many followed him to the river. He quietly took bath and went into the temple for worship. A typical day in the life of Atmananda. Live in Peace!!!

Remain Blessed.

Love Always, M

The NEST – A True Story

God Created Space. Man Created The Nest

Brian belonged to a Middle Class family. This also means that he inherited much more “DO’s” and “DON’T’s” from his family and the society than his rich and poor friends. Richness, or higher purchasing power, and poverty, or no purchasing power, have one thing in common –  FREEDOM. The middle class does not have this luxury, so they cover themselves with a cloth of convenience called morality. When walls of the society prevent their mobility, they hide behind the veil of morality. This is the truth of the middle class life.

Brian was a rather shy and introverted boy, who avoided all kinds of confrontations, but strongly objected to various forms of injustice that he encountered each day, in his daily life. He was also sensitive and carried many complexes up his sleeve. This often prevented him from shining bright or utilizing each opportunity to excel in his class.

Brian, with his parents and younger sister, lived in the suburbs of Mumbai. After his 12th class, he started travelling to the city central for further education. There he met Miranda, an intelligent girl with a no-nonsense attitude. She seemed to know what she wanted and how to get it. Initially, it was admiration that Brian felt, which later became obsession. Miranda’s absence made him depressed and low. Even though he was not sure if she ever noticed him or noticed him enough, he was happy to be around her. He was also impressed by the way she could see through her wooers and put them in their place. High level of maturity for a girl in her teens!!! She had the poise and style and, in a way, most boys were afraid of her. They left her alone, to a great extent. This increased Brian’s admiration towards her. He greatly admired elegance.

Elections brought them together. Elections gave them the proximity and time to develop an affair. Without their knowledge, they fell in love. Even though it happened by itself, for Brian, it was a dream come true. They became closer and closer. They eventually became inseparable.

Mind is the seat of emotions. Mind started the process of owning each other, more so with Brian. Even if he sees Miranda having a coffee with her male friends, let alone crack a joke and laugh aloud, he started becoming jealous. Slowly, difference in opinions started and it matured into heated arguments. There was no spate for jealousy. Mind gave various dimensions to Brian’s imagination. He had no idea how he could protect Miranda from other boys. Even though it was quite a tedious and time-consuming matter to take such detours, Brian picked up Miranda everyday from her house and dropped her back after the classes. Miranda was not too happy about Brian’s over-possessiveness. But, since she appreciated his honesty, sincerity and good heart, she swallowed his sundry objections without much resistance.

Jealousy Brings out the Devil in Men

Miranda was quite pretty and intelligent. She was the topper of her class. She always shone bright in all competitions and was also kind and considerate to others. Attitude of charity was inherent in her. She used to help the poor and needy when ever she could, and that too spontaneously, without waiting for others’ support. She would easily pick up the wounded dog in the street and take it home and nurse it back to health. She would feed birds everyday. She always carried some food with her for poor old lying neglected in the busy streets of Mumbai. Brian also loved this aspect of Miranda and he used to volunteer his support all the time. This was one aspect which kept Brian close to Miranda.

Greed has no respite. TRUE Happiness is in GIVING...

Time flew, classes ended, both Brian and Miranda got employed in good institutions and they decided to get married. It was a small and tidy function. Their relatives and a few friends participated. After marriage, they moved from their parents’ house into a rented apartment, which they later bought on hire purchase. A new life began. Miranda beautified their home within their resources and called it  “The NEST”.  Their marriage produced three children, within six years. After a boy and a girl, the youngest was Anna. A pretty and cute child. Miranda managed her family life and career efficiently. Brian was often amazed at her energy, as he used to be so tired by the time he returned back from his office. Miranda would still do cooking, taking care of children and Brian, and even prepare food for the next day, without any complaints. She hardly scolded her children or expressed discontentment about anything. Even when the children fell ill, she took them to hospital, brought them medicines, administered the medicines on time, yet, managed her office work and domestic chores. There was a part-time, old housemaid to help her. Even the finance management was her responsibility. Brian often felt like a demanding tourist in his own house, as his responsibility was quite limited to his office and his own affairs. He willingly allowed Miranda to run the house, i.e. the lethargic  nature of Brian automatically shifted all the regular responsibilities of the family to Miranda. Life continued thus.

Each Moment is a Gift to be Cherished. Love is the true energy of life.

Despite having limited responsibilities, Brian always complained, shouted and abused Miranda and their children. He continued to be jealous and suspicious about Miranda and her interaction with her colleagues and clients. He even spied on her when his suspicion got the better of him. Fortunately, Miranda was ignorant about the growing intensity of his suspicion and the pace with which this cancer of jealousy was spreading in Brian.

Brian was having sleepless nights. He also started resorting to alcohol to cool his suspicious mind. He wandered into unholy company of gamblers and alcoholics. Miranda was helpless. Her advice always ended up in bitter fights and, for the sake of children, she kept quiet. Brian’s lifestyle started affecting his work and he was warned for negligence, many times, until one day he finally got sacked. He even lost initiative to hunt for another job. He started sitting at home and it affected his morale. Miranda tried her best and got him another job. The new company of Brian’s was a client of Miranda’s company and she knew the boss very well. Brian swallowed his pride and joined the company, more because of his wounded ego for being a parasite of his own wife. But, he also suspected a relationship between his wife and his new boss. This started eating on his mind. He picked up silly fights with Miranda, which the matured Miranda ignored. She had many other important things to remember and perform concerning her family and her children. Children grew up well and excelled in their education. This gave inspiration and hope to Miranda, she was proud of them.

Jealousy is a serious cancer which destroys oneself and others too...

Arguments lead to severe conflicts, and even reached a point of divorce. They stopped speaking to each other and started communicating through the children. Children also became gloomy and silent. The Nest became a deserted ghost house when both Brian and Miranda were at home together. This continued until one day Anna fell sick and had to be admitted in the hospital. By the time the doctors diagnosed blood cancer, it was too late to save the child. Anna died in the hospital. Miranda loved Anna a lot and Brian also loved her in his own way. Her loss brought them together, at least temporarily. They forgot their differences and shared their grief. After a few months, Brian drifted back to his old ways. The NEST, once again, became a war zone.

One evening, due to heavy rains in Mumbai, Miranda called Brian to pick her up from her office, which was close to hers. He picked her up and while driving home, they had an argument over some silly reason. While they were shouting at each other, through the mist obscured window, Brian failed to see a parked trailer without any lights and rammed his car into it. Brian survived the accident, with broken bones while Miranda left her body, on the spot, at the age of 42 years and three months.

Brian spent three months in the hospital while the children were looked after by his mother (his father had passed away a few years before). Without Miranda, life became impossible for Brian. He had no clue how to move on. He started realizing the value and worth that Miranda added to his life. When he returned back home from hospital, he realized that he should quickly get back to work or else he won’t be able to run his family. It was taxing for him to manage everything with his salary. Also, he did not know what were the priorities at home and in his own life. He even thought that his children were too demanding. He started drinking alcohol again. His mother could not stand his indifference and took the children to her house. He became alone in his own house.

Every moment reminded him of Miranda. He started feeling that her ghost is haunting him. He developed many fears including the fear of darkness and death. He started feeling that he will go mad. Regret stabbed him each moment. All these years that they lived together, he had done nothing for Miranda. He had never expressed love, kindness or compassion towards her. He never bought for her even one piece of jewelery or a good dress, except in the initial days of togetherness. He was only expecting more and more from her and criticizing her for everything. He never even hugged her, kissed or made love to her since their last child was born. He never appreciated her. He was only possessive and jealous about her. He could not even buy any gifts or toys for his children, apart from their regular books and necessities.

When loneliness and guilt became overbearing, he left “The Nest” and went to a monastery.  He fell at the feet of the chief saint of the monastery and requested  for peace and solace. The saint said: “Just be silent.” When ever he asked a question, the answer was “just be silent.” Initially, it irked him. Later on, he accepted it. Days went by, his questions started vanishing. After 10 days, there were no more questions. Only silence. At that point, the only answer possible was “silence”. All ghosts vanished from him and he started seeing the naked truth.

Without anyone telling him anything, through silence, he saw his own life as if he was watching a movie. A beautiful life, completely uprooted and destroyed by his own mind and its expressions. Nobody else was wrong here, except his own mind. Mind created all the agonies. Mind created doubts. Mind created suspicion, jealousy. Mind created ghosts. Mind created everything. They were all so far from reality and it abruptly took away the life of a beautiful person, to say the least about the agony of others. It denied peace at home. With each new thought, each new revelation, Brian started crying more and more. He sat and cried for almost two days, without food or sleep. Nobody disturbed him. Nobody bothered him in the monastery. For once, he was thankful. He experienced the expansion happening in his own heart when gratefulness blossomed there. He liked that feeling.

Mind Spoils Moments. Mind Creates and Destroys Happiness. Mind creates the veils of dissatisfaction. Watch your mind...

He saw the whole fabric of his own life. He saw the moments at which he missed to express love, express care, express compassion, kindness, beauty, energy, even to hug and feel the warmth and heartbeat of his own wife and children;  just because of the overpowering devils called Jealousy and Suspicion that ruled his mind. These devils were constantly destroying his each moment. They prevented him from enjoying any moment and also destroyed the bliss of his home. He realized “We must cherish each moment with love and gratitude. Moments never return back. We are growing old each day. Children become adults. We grow old. Childhood is lost, youth is lost, death comes closer. We cannot go back and love our children when they were young. We cannot go back to the past. We cannot rewind and replay. We cannot go back and love our husband or wife. If a moment is lost, it is lost for ever. We can handle our life either with love or with restlessness. When we handle our life with love, it gives us peace and contentment. When we handle all our relationships with love, it all gives us fulfillment. When restlessness is our expression, destruction is the result. Even if others treat us with contempt or hatred, if our heart is filled with love, our heart will be full. Nothing will affect us. Trust and Faith are essential in all relationships. Every moment of existence should be approached with love and gratitude. We own nobody. Nobody owns us. We are born alone and will die alone. BEWARE – Death is always around the corner. Live each moment, Love each moment. Never hurt anyone through thoughts, words or action. NON VIOLENCE in its perfection.” Brian got up and walked up and down, digesting his revelation.

When this revelation settled in him deeply, he was a changed man. He went to the Chief of the Monastery. He bowed to the saint and said “Thank You for the message. Through silence, you gave me the most valuable message of my life. I will use the rest of my life to express what I could not express in my whole life. Thank You.” The saint said: “In the stillness of your own mind, like the still water, you saw your own reflection. Your answer lies within your question. Nothing lies outside of you. The key to unlock the answer is silence, stillness. You have found the key. Now, go and live in peace.”

Brian went to his mother’s house, hugged his mother and children and cried. He went back to the city, took another rented house, found a job and brought his children and mother to the new house. His life changed for good, but Miranda was not alive to see this change. He regretted deeply. He placed the pictures of Miranda and Anna in the altar, along with the pictures of the saints and deities that he worshiped. He kept a lamp burning in his altar all the time. He did his best to take care of his mother and children. He never married again. He lived the rest of his life like a saint, spreading the wisdom that he “owned”, the hard way.

We are Unique Beings in the Garden of God. Express abundance of Love.

This story may sound too ordinary compared to the previous posts. I have a reason to put it here. The need of the moment is LOVE. The world needs it all the more. In-sensitiveness is destroying our lives and our mother earth. Lives are getting torn apart because of restlessness, ego, hatred, jealousy, anger and such baser emotions. What is the benefit of “being spiritual” and practicing many paths to liberation according to one’s personal liking, if we cannot express love and compassion? If our inner space is full of calamities, nothing can take you forward in spirituality; all practices will only amount to escapism. True liberation is in our capacity to express love unconditionally, at all times. Without having kindness, compassion, love, and all such higher qualities, over flowing from the heart, there can be no liberation. God does not need your money nor your reverence. God is within you, not outside of you. If you cannot see God in all beings and learn to respect that God, what is your worship for? God is not sitting in temples, mosques or Churches. God lives in human hearts. If we cannot see the God within us and in the hearts of others, no amount of worship will get us salvation. Noting will take us to liberation. Meditation, satsangs, yoga or praanayams are all absolutely useless, unless its core essence, which is unconditional love, cannot be expressed whole heartedly. Otherwise, this life is wasted.

If we cannot see God in everyone, How can we SEE GOD at all???

Almost the whole of our life, most of us live in the cage of our own conditioning. This state refuses us any happiness. We fail to see the beauty and inherent happiness of our current moment and hope for happiness in the future. We lose the precious moment called NOW. When mind is set on future or past, we do not enjoy our present. Thus when we miss all opportunities, regrets eat our conscience. How many quarrels!!! How many fights!!! How many disappointments!!! Because of our conditioning and mental blocks, how many people have we alienated from ourselves!!! Because of our limitedness, how much of love did we discard, block, burn!!! Have we ever thought how many people became sad because of our thoughts, words and action? What did we gain from this? Are we better off because others are unhappy? Dissatisfaction is the nature of our mind. Allow it to be dissatisfied. Yet, appreciate the current moment without resistance. The more we resist, the more we suffer. The more we accept, the more we will be peaceful. There cannot be a bright future for the one who lives based on emotions which are always temporary. Negative emotions unleashed through its uncontrollable expressions will only bring forth regrets, guilt, shame and sadness in the future. Emotional outbursts are like bullets – once fired, they cannot be re-called. They must kill. The more stronger the cage of your conditioning is, liberation becomes all the more impossible, unless a real shake up happens in life, such as the death of a dear one, to make your eyes open. Postponing any expression is foolishness. What if tomorrow never happens!!! If you cannot express love today, how can we be sure that there will be a tomorrow to express it? The same is with gratitude, compassion and kindness. Everything should be spontaneous. Everything should be from the heart. Your heart should be spontaneous with these expressions. Life will give you wonderful moments. Otherwise, sorrow after sorrow will haunt you. Regrets will destroy you. Guilt will imprison you. There is no tomorrow. Do it NOW. ACT NOW.

In the midst of God's Abundance, We chose poverty.Poverty of the heart...

The Original Man

The Original Man

The Original Man

Time evolved man. Man evolved time. Man’s very existence became related to time. He forgot his true state of timelessness. He forgot his true nature. Man became another species on earth, detached from the “Father”. A vulnerable species. His basic existence revolved around his emotions, feelings, impressions and ego. He reduced his divine stature, to the stature of his own mind. He looked at the world through his own eyes, as he steadily lost his capacity to look at the world through his soul. Then began the long and winding journey of explorations of himself and the deep quest to find himself. Man’s search for himself continued through time and existence in various times. To find himself, man wandered through lands and oceans. Time after time, drop by drop, his consciousness evolved. Thus, we reached the study of evolution of consciousness of man. This is the story of the Original Man.

The Avatars of Lord Vishnu

The evolution Theory

Dr.Charles Darwin said that man evolved into his current state from the Ape. Let it be so. No arguments. Darwin contributed a lot in molding the mind of the 20th century man. He, along with Karl Marx and Sigmund Freud, sowed great imaginations into the minds of 20th century men and influenced the thought process of the entire generation, thus changing the course of history and thought pattern of the modern man. Respecting the contributions of Charles Darwin, especially in making people think differently, let us look at the evolution theory objectively.

Darwin's theory indirectly endorses 'Dasavathara', the sequence of the avatars of Lord Vishnu.

If liberation, as we spiritual seekers feel, is the reason for existence, why did we reincarnate again and again? Why this tedious process of trial and error? Well, one cannot reach the highest class without going through the lower classes. That’s the answer. In that case, we have to agree that God has been experimenting with beings with lower consciousness, allowing them time and space to reach His consciousness by themselves. If this is true, then, the old Vedic principle of “Nethi” “Nethi”, or “Not That” “Not That”, becomes more relevant. The Guru never taught the truth to the disciple; instead, he just gave hints. The student meditated on those hints and came back to the master asking if his finding is the final knowledge. The master would just say “Not That”. The student went back and contemplated further. Thus, with the aid of nature and sheer contemplation into himself and his own existence, he would eventually reach his own soul. When the student culminates his search on his own soul and from there to God-consciousness, he would  never go back to his Master. Till then, he kept going back asking the same question and receiving the same answer – “Not That”. So, if we follow the theory of evolution of man from uni-cellular being to the super conscious being, our consciousness has taken ages to reach here. This is quite a possibility. Right?

The Devolution Theory

The Fall in Consciousness is the Real Fall

If we contemplate on the fall of man – God created man in his own image. This means, with all the power and potential of God Himself. Let’s call him Adam. We must consider a few things here. God is formless. God is omnipresent. God is not prone to emotions. God has unlimited intelligence. God exists in super conscious state. God can multiply Himself at will. God expresses Himself through all materials. God creates, maintains and dissolves all materials from Himself into Himself. So, Adam should have all those powers. But the difference here is, Adam is made up of elements while God is consciousness. Adam is matter, even if the identification is temporary. God is pure energy. That difference became too expensive for Adam. God operates through His consciousness and Adam operates through his mind and intellect. Heavy limitation. But, when God created Adam, He also gave him the potential to realize his true stature by installing the three (subtle energy meridians branching out throughout the etheric body) and a three-and-a-half-coiled Serpent (Kundalini) near the root chakra (energy centre at the bottom of the spine). The serpent always sleeps and that allows Adam to believe that he is the limited body. When the serpent is awakened, and especially when it moves, he experiences strange sensations happening to him. He often becomes helpless, emotional, vulnerable, erratic… So, in order to feel control over himself and the space outside of him, he had unconsciously allowed the serpent to sleep. Therefore, the theory of devolution amounts to the fall of Adam from his original stature of “God Man” ( Man who had the potential and power of his Creator)  to that of ordinary Man, who is close to animals in stature.

The Fall

The Fall in Consciousness

The male Adam wanted a female body as his companion because he saw animals procreating and his identifications naturally drifted to that of animals. He was indeed more  superior than animals, but, he had nothing to compare himself with. At least not anything higher than himself. So, he asked for Eve. He had the power to create Eve at will. Some species still possess that power. When all the beings of that species becomes one gender, some of them convert themselves into the other gender to help continue the species. This is usual with certain amphibians – frogs, etc. Since Adam was superior to amphibians and since he had the power of God, he created Eve. Actually Adam did not realize that He had the power to create as many as himself at Will, because that’s the way God creates. With creation, his Kundalini also got awakened. When Kundalini started moving through his chakras, strange emotions started to surge and spurt out. Sexual Desire was the most powerful of them all. Thus, as Kundalini moved through the earth (Root Chakra) and pierced the Water element (Swadhishtana Chakra), he could not control his sexual urge anymore. The call of the elements and the surging Kundalini, the serpent, tilted Adam. He ate the forbidden fruit. He procreated with Eve. He started feeling “naked”. He fell in consciousness, from the supreme consciousness of God and creation at will, to a lower consciousness of  having to procreate to keep the species going. The fall was from unlimited super consciousness to limited consciousness associated with his body, mind and intellect. Thus he reduced himself to the nature of elements, or, in other words, the nature of animals, and inherited all the associated woes. The fall of consciousness happened there. Body, which is made out of elements, had to be re-created through procreation, not will. Man lost the power to conglomerate raw energy into matter and thus create another man. Consciousness fell to the level of animals. Then, through Generations, with the help of many masters and evolved souls, man started climbing up, step by step, to the highest of consciousness. It was a difficult process. It was an uphill task, especially as he had to fight his basic, inherited primal nature and grow in consciousness, while the primal nature always lurked behind. Nature and environment intensified the fall. He slipped again and again. Ignorance shrouded the truth. He lost his direction. He forgot his way back home. He lost his destination. God patiently waited. He allowed the time for his son to find his way home because God has always been existing in timelessness. Man played with Maya (worldly illusion). Maya played with Man.

The Territorial Man

Man became territorial - like animals

As the consciousness fell, man became territorial, like animals. He started guarding his territory, property and people. He became possessive and vengeful. He guarded his territory and, whenever he could, he tried to expand his territory. “Dissatisfaction” got written in bold letters on his forehead. Man could never satisfy himself. He came back again and again, to further satisfy his ever-growing desires. Ignorance helped here. He always lost his memories of his bizarre quests and thus repeated them, basking in his ignorance. He asked many questions, to himself and to others, which were just expressions of his confusion, but never lived the true answers. He kept avoiding truth for the available tangible delusion or Maya.

The Greedy Man

Man's Greed Devastated the Mother Earth

Man fell to greed and extreme possessiveness, associated with ignorance of his true nature. Along with defined territory, power happened. Power bred greed for more. Possessions were displayed in tangible formats, such as Gold, Precious stones, captive women for pleasure or many wives, many captivated animals, many soldiers, etc. Man collected trophees to prove his one-up-man-ship to others about his own status. The vacuum created by loss of stature was filled with greed for social status. He groomed himself to do anything to make money, attain power, and enhance his social status. His society also blindly supported material success, ignoring the crimes behind the unlimited money.

The Saintly Man

True Saints Loved Without Expectations

There have been detached beings in every society, who could have anything, but needed nothing. When money, power, wealth and women lured the average man, these people stayed afloat in the social existence, unaffected, like a lotus flower above the water. Even when they were standing in knee-deep mud of existence, they expressed beauty and shine of divine on the surface. Early kings were advised by such saints. They advised the kings to rule the country based on Dharma or basic noble duty. Their advice kept the kings grounded, pious and their subjects at peace and harmony. They sowed unconditional love on the paths of existence of the kings as well as their subjects. They said, “where ever all people are not protected without discrimination, where ever mothers cannot feel safe,  where ever children cannot play without fear, where ever power is not used to help and save the poor and hungry, where ever animals are not protected, where ever trees and plants are not respected, where ever life is not respected and nurtured, disease and decay will happen. Downfall and destruction will take place.”

The Business Man

Business Empires Decided the Destiny of People of the World

Man learned to wield power effectively. Power and Control. Power was the key. Control was the method. Fear was the tool. As the time evolved, the duel between the positive and negative continued in every mind. The saints were discarded and the glitter-bitten kings chose business men as their kins and advisors. They believed in profits. They believed in time equated with profits. Time will never be spent for free ever again. Time will be spent, provided there are gains. Life became transactional. Relationships became transactional. Love became conditional. Rule became profit based. Power was with the business men. They also started creating rulers. Wars happened to satisfy the greed of man. Weapon manufacturers became the ones who decide the future of societies and countries. People assassinated people. People tortured and killed people. People were exploited. Everything was camouflaged and done in the name of religion and dharma!!! Man fell further and further in consciousness. His consciousness became demonic. Some people who lost everything in the bargain, had nothing further to lose and started rising up in consciousness. Higher masters held their hand and helped them to walk the wounded path. Some struggled and fell disillusioned. Some clung on to the faith and survived. The business man thought he is having the last laugh. But that was an illusion too. Time after time, the new replaced the old and the more cunning survived. They insensitively ravaged their very seat of power – The Mother Earth. The Mother watched the whole show in tears, helplessly. On her chest, men killed men, destroyed property and dug deep holes into the very existence of future generations. Greed for profits spilled the very guts of the Mother Earth. It imbalanced her very existence. Greed continued and profits justified all aberrations of man kind.

The Family Man

consciousness became Unitized. Family became his limit. No world Beyond...

Man shrunk. He became family oriented and started shrinking to responsibilities only related to his immediate family. His territory became his family. He became reasonably selfish. His whole world became himself and his family. This narrow mindedness and insensitiveness about others, glued his consciousness to the limits of his family. Poor man. Every blow in the harmony of his family affected his heart deeply. Expectations killed him. He often died heart broken.

The Social Man

Consciousness grew beyond his family to fill the society

The social man was a bit better. He also cared for his society and the poor and down trodden. Karl Marx provided wind to his wings and 20th century saw the fertile imaginations of many social people taking flights and organizing revolutions. Their intentions were good. They cared for people. Maybe only people. Still, it was better than gross insensitiveness and inertia. Yet, every society consists of the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. Each carved his own dimension into the social structure. In all these times, those who slipped into higher consciousness or those who could see beyond the box and dared to talk about what they see, were assassinated or eradicated. As human beings, we always despised those who chose to be different. We loved to burn challengers of our beliefs. We hated to think differently. We chose continuity of thoughts and beliefs. We have always been afraid of changes. Thus, the society killed Socrates, Jesus and many others, who were different and had the ability to show the light of higher consciousness, to the average man. We can be proud of our tenacity to stick to our path!!!

Society created Do’s and Don’ts. The society also created morality and acceptable code of conduct. Some society even created rigid morality and severe punishments for those who dis obeyed. Men started to pretend. Pretensions became the acceptable mode of existence. Pretensions entangled men further to social bindings. Some people live their whole life on pretensions and waste it completely. They pretend happiness, they pretend love, they pretend care, they pretend benevolence, they pretend spirituality, they pretend knowledge etc. Eventually, when they have to meet the reality, they would have already lost their life. This sad story gets repeated in every society, to many people. Yet, people refuse to get real and resort to their pretensions to gain social acceptance. Those few who dare to walk alone, stays liberated, despite social persecutions. Pretension is one thing that is definitely anti-spiritual.

Society created morality for the middle class. The rich and the poor had nothing to do with it. The middle class contains the most pretenders too. They are neither rich, nor poor. Since by nature, with erect spine, man likes to look above his eye level, they try to be what they are not. ( If you ask a child to write on the wall, he will write above his eye level. This is the nature of man) The more the morality, the more are violations too. Along with violations, gross suppressions also happen. Suppressions lead to restlessness. Social restlessness leads to calamities and revolution. Thus, the ignorance of man, combined with no effort to keep the hygiene of the inner world, makes our society a filthy alley.

The Cunning Man

The Fall of Man to Mediocrity further entangled him.

The cunning man always survived. He is street smart. He is intelligent. He is manipulative and well-spoken. He has beautiful presentation skills. He is selfish, but conceals that skillfully. He is handsome and effective. He is considered a good businessman. With the fall of consciousness, those who displayed their intellect in anyway possible, and those who successfully attracted money or power, were worshiped. Cunningness became a symbol of success. It was often re-named as strategy for success. We saw many cunning men, who effectively eradicated good and passive people and climbed up the ladders of material success. We made their statues and we honored them wherever possible.

The Political Man

Selfish Politicians became the biggest Liability to the common men of the world

The cunning man often left his business and opted power instead, or played the dual game. They played the game of politics and business simultaneously. Everything is fair in politics and war. They re-defined territories and walking spaces of the common man. Passive social men, who are often called  “donkeys” were led, mis-lead and, at convenience, manipulated to gain their ends. Political man blamed all the sufferings as inevitable in the path of ultimate freedom and independence. Generation after generation saw the same dish served in different ornamental plates. The donkey men were happy to see the changes in the plate and ignored the dish. As long as there is food, life goes on. So, suffering never ended. The promised freedom never happened. Political man changed his costumes time and again and appeared to appease the bonded minds with promises which they never meant to keep. All manipulations were called ‘strategic decisions’, which confused the social man. They knew that the best way to rule is to confuse. Faces changed. Confusions remained. Life went on. Dictators came and went. Wars came and went. Many got killed. Many survived. Life went on. Never was any politician punished by the law. The long hands of the law managed to reach only till the gates of the politician, but never dared to touch him. When the law got too close, he gave someone else to satisfy the hunger of the law and escaped from that situation. Law was applicable only to ordinary people. The rich politician had nothing to do with it. They were law makers. They have always been immune to law. Even when saints who guided generations to liberation were burnt at stake, politicians were never touched for even grosser crimes that they committed. History has seen this phenomenon consistently repeated time and again with every generation, since time began.

The God Man

God Men came as perpetual Road Signs - in the path of Liberation

There were a few God men, who stayed away from the eyes of the society, maintaining the higher consciousness and

Amongst Mediocre Existence, Jewels of Wisdom Happens

avoiding the contamination of the social life. Who ever came to the society out of compassion, were scandalized, ridiculed, imprisoned or even assassinated. Those who escaped the society, searched for the princes among the frogs. They had to kiss many frogs to get a few princes. They guided those true seekers and elevated them to the highest possible level of consciousness within the possible time. They left the rest to fight out their survival in the quagmire of lower consciousness. God men were very few, but, they helped balance the gross negativity. they often burnt themselves like candles. They served without expecting anything in return.

Negativity never needed any nurturing. It came uninvited, like the weed, and overtook the garden by force. It feasted on trees, plants and sometimes, even the gardener. Many fell. Some survived. Those who survived, showed the rest, the light of true existence and evolution. Some followed the light. Those who missed the glow and procrastinated, got dissolved in time.

Man who fell from super consciousness to the animal consciousness, is slowly climbing back up, step by step. The path is difficult. It is filled with thorns and danger. The luring and uncontrollable mind is the biggest danger. The ego and all identifications too. This journey of liberation is only possible through determination and awareness of the present. Those who get there will rejoice. Those who fall back, will come back, to try again.

The Types of Men

An ancient classification states:

Mineral Man – Selfish, Not interested in anyone else but himself. Usually Greedy and Self-centered.

Plant Man – Selfish to the extent of his family. He is not interested in anything else beyond his close family.

Animal Man – Selfish to the extent of his family and his community. He is not interested in anything beyond his community.

Human Man – Selfish to the extent of his family, his community and his country. He is not interested in any welfare beyond his country.

God Man – Selfless. He loves beyond all man-made barriers. He does not care of caste, creed, communities, countries, colors and classifications. He loves everyone just like the sun spreads its rays equally around, without discrimination. Man’s consciousness reaches its human zenith when he spontaneously becomes a “God Man” – a man beyond barriers.

Where do we stand? CONTEMPLATE!!! It’s worth knowing….
